Jarrett Walker + Associates joined MRCagney in this analysis and redesign of the bus network in Christchurch, the primary city of New Zealand’s South Island. Christchurch was severly damaged by the 2011 earthquake that destroyed most of the historic city centre. Since then, the bus system has been gradually reassembled.
The 2016 review was designed to address concerns about low ridership, which reflect a network that is largely focused on coverage goals rather than ridership goals. In a Core Design Workshop with city and regional transport staff, Jarrett led the development of three alternative futures for the network, depending on the relative priority placed on ridership as a goal. Throughout the project JWA provide policy guidance, while MRCagney led most analysis and mapping tasks.
